Reflection Post #2

Hi everyone!

Welcome back to my Genius Hour- passion project #2. I will admit, it was definitely hard to find the time to get this one hour in (most pieces of this size take longer than the hour), but after it was done, the satisfaction was amazing! When thinking about my second piece, I knew that I wanted to do something that was more challenging than the last. I notice that when doing string art in the past- the rounder the piece, the more challenging it is to keep cohesive. I decided to do this treble clef because it was requested by one of my friends and I knew that this would definitely challenge me more than my general research piece.

The Materials
Let's start by discussing the materials. I knew that the wood and nails were perfect from last time and stuck with the same barn board and finishing nails. My 2 main changes were the design and size of crocheting thread. I found that last time using such a small design, thinner thread (size 10) worked well, however, I began to wonder how many passes around the inside of the design I would need to do to fill it in nicely. The problem with the number of passes is that eventually, it begins to look messy around the outside. I decided to use a size 3 for my crocheting thread and was not disappointed. It was MUCH easier to work with.

My Learning Objective
Below I have embedded my learning objective that contains a brief rundown of all of the materials. I used thinglink to create this learning objective as a way to demonstrate in a more engaging way the various materials that are needed to create this project at home. I feel that this app is so much more interactive than a simple list as the text becomes one with the image and is very visually appealing to the user. As a future educator, I will definitely use this in various activities that involve labeling fundamental features (such as on graphs)!

The Process:   Before we begin talking about the process, check out how awesome this piece turned out! I am so proud of it.

Based on my last post, I was really hoping to create a strategic pattern with my string and unfortunately- this did not happen. The middle of my piece had a large gap that did not fill very nicely because I did not place enough nails. In past designs, I placed the nails where they looked somewhat even because with a random design this does not matter. I am not saying that the random pattern looks bad at all- I am very happy with how my end product turned out because this is a rustic look but, not specific to what I was hoping for. I am happy to have these posts as a way to reflect on my journey because although I am hoping to become "a master"- this will not happen in 3 hours over a 3 week period. However, this is the beginning of learning more about how I can refine my skills.

I noticed that I had the most fun with the nails. I am getting a lot better with my coordination and have only needed to bend a few backs into place. This was a challenge for me last week so I have already improved in one area!

The stringing gave me some challenges, although I love the outline that I did at the end of the piece. If one good thing came out of this project, it is definitely that technique that I learned from last week. I am wondering if I possibly need to break my piece into several sections and do the specific patterns compartmentally as opposed to a continuous string. My main problem was getting from one section back to another without overlapping. This is something I will explore next time.

Goals for next week:
I learned a lot this week. I have improved, but also have a long way to go. Next week I will definitely be watching some YouTube videos to see how these masters get such precise patterns on their designs. I will also make a guide before I begin instead of going in "blind". Maybe I can find a stencil. I am unsure of the specific pattern I will be using next week but will come to this with more research. I cannot wait to show you what I came up with!

Talk to you all next week,

Catherine

  1. Hi Catherine!
I love your idea for Genius Hour! So fun!
You may need to check the ThingLink on this post, I can't see and only see a message that it's private! :(
Overall, great job, I can't wait to see what you make in the future!
