Reflection Post #3
Hey everyone!
Welcome back to my blog and THE FINAL POST! I made you all a little stop motion to celebrate the end of this Genius Hour journey. See if you can spot some common "friends" from the past week. Check it out!
To recap on my journey from last week, I found that my hardest struggles involved creating a pattern with the design based on the placement of the nails. My goal for this week'sM design was to bring together my first post with my last post and practice some of the skills that I have struggled with over the past few weeks. So let's begin!
The design process:

The design I made was custom created for a friend that was hoping to have a piece made for her home. The fact that I was able to create this piece for her that was different from some other images I found online was such a great feeling. It made me feel like it was completely my own. I loved being able to use this design as my last project as it tied together challenging details with my original maple leaf! I was nervous about this piece as the rounded corners were very small which would involve and steady hand as the nails would need to be very close together. I definitely do not feel I would have been able to do this one without having practiced with the treble clef last week! This definitely reinforces the mastery of certain skills over the course of this project. Again, I designed this image with the procreate app on my iPad.

The Research Phase:
As we can all remember, last week I felt that I needed more practice creating a strategic design with my string art pattern. However, I have come to realize and accept this week that this does not work with all designs. The reason for this is because it is 100% dependant on the placement of the nails. I focused really hard this week on trying my best to keep nails close together which definitely did the job of having little wood showing in the form of gaps. I also focused on keeping alternate nails symmetrical to assist with a pattern. This did not work. The perfectionist in me was frustrated but used my research as a form of validation that sometimes a disorganized pattern is the truest form of art in this method. I love rustic looks and definitely feel that although some designs can look amazing with patterns of stringing, some designs are just not made for that.
When looking up videos of how others have attempted the antler pattern, I could not find much. I had to resort to images to see if I could decode how they strung the pattern and all of the images were random stringing which looked awesome. This really validated that I am doing good work, especially being that people are paying for things that look very much like what I am producing. With that, I got to work. I have linked a Pinterest board here that has some inspiration for this piece.
The Creation Phase:
The Creation Phase:
The most challenging part of this project was getting the design to print and symmetrically place it on the board. Being that the wood plank was 16"x10" the image needed to be printed in 2 pieces. This was a serious challenge. In the end, with some help from my boyfriend, we cut the image in half on word and flipped that piece once it was sized to be completely even. This made lining it up and measuring so easy. I'm definitely glad I am a math major that knows how to divide fractions or else this would have been rough! Do your math homework kids. Look how symmetrical!
From here on out, everything was not only easy but relaxing. I have come to love hammering and know that this is truly an art I am passionate about. I would not regret this choice for my project at all. I know I still have a long way to go to be a "master" but I also feel that the best artists still have things to learn. Three weeks is definitely not enough time to become the best at this art form but I have most definitely improved and am super excited to see what else I can produce. This is not the end of me on this blog.
Here is how my final piece turned out! I love it!
Stay tuned as I reflect more on this journey in my final post and if you haven't already, check out my Ted Talk.
Thank you for all of the support,
Catherine
